Anatomy
What Is on a Target Receipt
A Target receipt is the record from a big-box trip where household goods, groceries, and paper products land in one cart, most of them under Target's own labels. It identifies the store, register, transaction, and cashier, itemizes each product, sums the subtotal and tax, records the card, and prints the REDcard savings for the trip. The example below mirrors the Nicollet Mall store in Minneapolis. Swap in your own store and items and it becomes a receipt you can print or save.
- Store header
- The store name centered at the top with the street address and phone below, identifying which Target rang the sale.
- Transaction identifiers
- The store number, transaction number, register, and cashier printed as a compact block of four fields. Guest Services asks for the store and transaction numbers on a return.
- Item lines
- Each product on its own line in a quantity, name, price format, mostly Target owned brands: Threshold for home, Market Pantry and Good & Gather for grocery, Up&Up for household. Item prices print as bare numbers with no dollar sign.
- Payment and tax summary
- The subtotal, the sales tax with the local rate beside it, and the total in dollars, then the REDcard with the account masked to the last four and the amount charged.
- REDcard savings and returns
- The 5% REDcard discount for the trip as its own line, then the footer: the Expect More, Pay Less tagline, the 90 day return policy, and the 120 day window REDcard holders get.

Who uses it
Who Makes a Target Receipt
Returns and Proof of Purchase
Rebuild a lost Target receipt so an item still has a dated record inside the 90 day window, or the 120 days a REDcard holder gets.
Expense and Household Records
Keep a clean record of a supply run made for work, a rental, or a shared household when the printed slip did not survive.
OCR and App Test Data
Generate mixed grocery and household line items, including a quantity of two and bare number pricing, to test a receipt scanner or a budgeting app.
Film, TV, and Photo Props
Dress a scene with a believable big-box receipt that reads correctly on camera, with no watermark to paint out.
A quick note on the rules: making a receipt shaped file for a mockup, a test, a class, or a lost expense you really paid is fine. Passing one off as proof of a purchase that never happened is fraud. Please do not do that.
FAQ
Target Receipt Questions
What Information Is on a Target Receipt?
The store name, address, and phone, the date and time, the store, transaction, register, and cashier numbers, each item with its price, the subtotal, sales tax, and total, the card with the last four digits and the amount charged, the REDcard savings for the trip, and the return policy in the footer.
What Does the You Saved Line Mean?
It is the REDcard discount, five percent off the trip, taken at the register and printed as its own line under the amount charged rather than against each item.
Why Do Item Prices Have No Dollar Sign?
Target prints bare numbers against the items and dollar signs on the totals block. This template does the same, so the two blocks read the way a real slip does.
How Long Is the Target Return Window?
The receipt in this example prints 90 days with the receipt and 120 days for REDcard holders. Edit the footer if your store prints different terms.
Is This an Official Target Document?
No. This is an editable template that follows the layout of a big-box receipt. It is for mockups, tests, props, and rebuilding a record of a purchase you actually made, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Target.
