Anatomy
What Is on a Costco Receipt
A Costco receipt reads differently from a supermarket slip. There is no card block at the top and no product marketing, just the warehouse name and number, the member number, then a dense list where every line carries a tax code, the warehouse item number, an abbreviated description, and the price. Below the total the tax is broken out by code, and the footer counts the items sold and stamps the register, transaction, and operator. The example below mirrors the Thornton, Colorado warehouse. Swap in your own warehouse and items and it becomes a receipt you can print or save.
- Warehouse header
- The warehouse name and number, such as Thornton #629, with the street address underneath. Costco heads the slip with the location rather than a company line, and no phone number prints.
- Member line
- The member number the trip was rung against, printed above the items. It is what the membership counter and the returns desk look a purchase up by.
- Item lines with tax codes
- Each line leads with its tax code, then the warehouse item number, then an abbreviated description like KS DICED TOM for a Kirkland Signature product, with the price on the right. The item number is what you quote for a price adjustment.
- Totals and tax breakdown
- The subtotal, tax, and total in bare numbers with no dollar signs, then a separate block that breaks the tax out by code, showing what each rate collected and a total tax line.
- Footer stamp
- The total number of items sold, then the date, time, register, and transaction numbers on one line, then the operator number and name. There is no thank you branding beyond a short Thank You and Please Come Again.

What the Codes on a Costco Receipt Mean
| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| E | A taxable item. The E rate line in the tax breakdown shows what those items were charged. |
| A | A non-taxable item, typically grocery. It prints a rate line too, at 0.00 when nothing in the basket qualified. |
| Item number | The warehouse number for the product, such as 633561. Quote it for a price adjustment or when finding the item again. |
| KS | Kirkland Signature, the Costco owned brand, abbreviated in the item description. |
| Member | The membership number the trip was rung against, needed for returns and for warranty on big-ticket items. |
| OP# | The operator number of the employee who rang the sale, printed with their first name. |

Who uses it
Who Makes a Costco Receipt
Returns and Price Adjustments
Rebuild a lost Costco receipt so a purchase still has a dated record with the item numbers, which is what the returns desk and a price adjustment are checked against.
Business and Expense Records
Keep a clean record of a warehouse run made for a business, an event, or a shared household when the printed slip did not survive.
OCR and App Test Data
Generate coded warehouse line items with item numbers and a split tax block to test a receipt scanner or an expense parser against a harder layout.
Film, TV, and Photo Props
Dress a scene with a believable warehouse club receipt that reads correctly on camera, with no watermark to paint out.
A quick note on the rules: making a receipt shaped file for a mockup, a test, a class, or a lost expense you really paid is fine. Passing one off as proof of a purchase that never happened is fraud. Please do not do that.
FAQ
Costco Receipt Questions
What Does E Mean on a Costco Receipt?
E marks a taxable item. A marks a non-taxable one. Both codes get their own line in the tax breakdown under the total, showing the rate and what it collected, so you can see exactly which part of the basket was taxed.
What Are the Numbers Next to Each Item?
They are Costco's warehouse item numbers. Each product has one, and it is the fastest way to identify an item for a return, a price adjustment, or to find it again in store.
Why Is There No Card Block on a Costco Receipt?
The layout puts the tax breakdown and the transaction stamp where other stores print the card details. This template follows that, with the tax rows sitting in the block below the total.
What Does KS Mean on the Receipt?
KS is Kirkland Signature, Costco's owned brand. Descriptions are abbreviated to fit the narrow slip, so a Kirkland Signature product reads as something like KS DICED TOM.
Is This an Official Costco Document?
No. This is an editable template that follows the layout of a warehouse club receipt. It is for mockups, tests, props, and rebuilding a record of a purchase you actually made, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Costco.
